Otology & Neurotology

The sub-specialties of Otology-Neurotology (Ear Surgery) and Pediatric Otolaryngology (Pediatric Ear, Nose, and Throat)
Otology-Neurotology are the specialized fields of medicine that are dedicated to the diagnosis and medical/surgical treatment of disorders of the ears and hearing in children and adults.

Otologic surgeons perform surgery of the ear including:

  • ear tubes (myringotomies and transtympanic tubes)
  • middle ear reconstructive surgery (tympanoplasty, ossiculoplasty, stapedectomy, Kraus K-Helix Prostheses)
  • excision of middle ear tumors
  • cholesteatoma surgery
  • chronic middle ear and mastoid surgery
  • facial nerve surgery
  • balance procedures
  • procedures to deliver medications to the inner ear (intratympanic dexamethasone, gentamicin, etc)
  • cochlear implant surgery (Cochlear Americas and Advanced Bionics CI's)
  • implantable hearing device surgery (BAHA, Ponto, Maxum devices)
  • temporal bone trauma surgery

Pediatric otolaryngology is the sub-specialty within Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery that treats conditions and diseases of the Ears, Nose, and Throat in children under 18 years of age.
